When we see two letters beside each other in Mathematics it means that they are multiplied. So 'vw' means that whatever the value of 'v' is has to be multiplied by whatever the value of "w" is. In this case the result is then to be multiplied by 3. If v = 5 and w = 8 then you substitute these numbers into the problem. 3vw becomes 3 x (5 x 8). Now all you have to do is work out the answer.
