You also do that to add or subtract!

You memorize the rules that are considered standard.
They both use PEMDAS or Order of Operation
It means the operation that is shown.
The main operations of relational algebra are 1. The select Operation 2. The projection operation 3. The union operation 4.The set different operations 5.The Cartesian-product operation. 6.The rename operation. 7.Additional operations. 8.The Set-Intersection operations. 9.Natural-join operations. 10.Division operation. 11.The Assignment operation.
The opposite is defined in the context of an operation. So, if the operation is addition, then the opposite is the additive inverse. If the operation in multiplication, then the opposite is the reciprocal. If the operation is exponentiation then the opposite is the logarithm, if the operation is sine then the opposite is arc sine. In function notation, if y = f(x) then the opposite is x = f-1(y), which may or may not always be defined.
There is no operation for a single number and so there can be no order of operation.
