Let the height be x-8 and the base be x:

1/2(height)(base) = area

1/2(x-8)(x) = 10

Multiply both sides by 2:

(x-8)(x) = 20

Multply out the brackets:

x2 -8x = 20

Solve as an quadratic equation:

x2-8x-20 = 0

Factorize:

(x+2)(x-10) = 0

Solution: x = -2 or x = 10 The dimensions can't be negative so x must = 10

Therefore: height = 2 meters and base = 10 meters
