The slope of a straight line is calculated as:

slope = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)

= -1(y1 - y2)/-1(x1 - x2)

= -1/-1 x (y1 - y2)/(x1 - x2)

= 1 x (y1 - y2)/(x1 - x2)

= (y1 - y2)/(x1 - x2)

So it doesn't matter which way round you label the points: all that matters is that whichever point's y-coordinate you subtract from the other point's y-coordinate, you also subtract its x-coordinate from the other point's x-coordinate.

A.True

Is the horizontal change the differences in the x-coordinates when computing slope?

When computing the slope of a line, choose two points along the line and do the following: Let's say the points we choose are (1,3) & (2,5). To compute the slope we need to use the slope formula: m = (y1-y2) / (x1-x2). So, using the two points we chose, just plug them into the formula: m = (3-5) / (1-2) = -2 / -1 = 2. Therefore, our slope is 2. These particular points yield the graph, y = 2x + 1.

How do you sketch a line with a slope that is less than -5?

Choose a number that is less than -5; for example, -10 (or, if you mean "less in absolute value", for example -2), choose two or three points for that slope, then draw the line through those points.

Does it make a difference what two points on a line you choose when finding slope?

Absolutely not, because the slope of the line does not change no matter its location on the x or y axis.

What is the formula for calculating the slope of a staircase, incorporating the measurements of the stair rise and run?

The formula for calculating the slope of a staircase is: slope rise / run. This means you divide the height of the stair rise by the depth of the stair run to determine the slope of the staircase.
