This is scientific notation.

Scientific notation is straightforward and in this case, the 1 is the base number and the 107 is the number of decimal places (here it would be zeros) following. So, 1 x 107 is 10,000,000. This is generally true for base numbers not showing a decimal point. Just add the number of zeros in the superscript.

The only tricky part to scientific notation has to do with the decimal point.

Consider 3.14 x 105. Clearly 3.14 is the base. If not for the existing decimal point in the base, the 105 would call for 5 zeros at the end, but this is incorrect. (In other words, 3.1400000 is not right!)

Instead, what you need to do is move the decimal point 5 places to the right and add zeros as necessary. The correct answer would be 3.14 x 105 = 314,000.

(To verify, count the number of positions the decimal moved. Recall, any number that does not show a decimal always has an invisible decimal at the end .)

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?
