An unknown or changeable quantity is a variable. We use variables when we don't know what a certain amount is, and they're usually referred to as "x," or "y."

For example, if I had a problem where I needed apples, had $15, and knew that each apple was $1.50, I would use a variable to see how many apples I could buy (because right now that's an unknown number). I could solve it by writing 1.50x =15 to find my answer (which is x =10).

It's called a variable, darling. Like that ex who can't make up their mind - always changing and keeping you on your toes. Just when you think you've got it figured out, bam, they throw you a curveball. But hey, that's life for you.
