"Lowest form" means that you cannot divide the same number out of the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom). In other words, it cannot be any simpler.

For instance, if you have 2/4, you can divide both the top and bottom of the fraction by two. You will end up with 1/2.

If you have 6/9, you can divide the top and the bottom by three. You will end up with 2/3.

There is no number besides one which goes evenly into both 9 and 10. For this reason, 9/10 is in lowest form.

A good rule of thumb is if both the numerator and denominator are even, you can divide both by two.

As you practice simplifying fractions, you will figure out which numbers it's easier to take a multiple of 2 (like 4, 6, 8, 10, etc.) out of, instead of taking two out the top and bottom several times.

When a fraction is odd (the top, bottom, or both is not even), begin by trying to find some common factors, or numbers that go into both. 3 and 5 are good numbers to start with.

Good luck!
