There are several symbols for universal set:
The last two above (E and "ξ" in html ) are not currently in common use and yet they cannot be mistaken for the "set union" operator -- "∪" in html (aka "cup"). On the other hand, perhaps the "mistaken similarity" is intentional: the universal set being the union of all other sets.
The complement of an empty set is universal set
It is the set of all the things you are dealing with or considering. For example, if I am looking at subsets that are even integers and I am looking at all integers, then the set of all integers is the universal set. If we are looking at hair color, some subsets are redheads, blondes etc. The universal sets is the set of all possible hair colors.
