Well, for one, the problem of having to perform surgery on such small areas where the risk of cutting into the wrong thing was a very serious concern. For another, they simply make surgery more quick and efficient, not to mention painless. Lasic surgery also leaves smaller, if any, traces of a scar. For instance: my father had lasic surgery on his shoulder a while back because his shoulder was dis-jointed. There were only, threee very small, very unnoticeable cuts that were visible on the problematic shoulder. To this day, one can barely see the three small scars on his shoulder.

Of the reasons, however, one's vanity is the most common reason that a person would give to this answer, simply because of the lack of significant scarring.
