The 16th century is AFTER the middle ages. The middle ages ended in the late 1400's.

___________

The 16th century has more in common with the early 17th than with most of the 15th, and is therefore generally considered "early modern", along with the 17th century and most of the 18th (as well as the late 15th). "Modern" in this usage begins usually in 1453 or 1492, though in economic and population terms a better dividing'line might be c.1470.
