from trigonometry - (you'll need a table or calculator) - the "tangent" function is the ratio of the opposite side of a right triangle to the base.

in your example,

the opposite side is the "height" of the tower,

the base is the "distance you're standing from the tower",

and the angle is measured from where you're standing to the top of the tower.

alternately, without having "tangent" tables or a calculator,

you can make 2 triangles using something of a known height (a 1 meter stick, or something else) - create a 2nd triangle using the "object of known height" with the same incidence angle as the tower and measure the distance from you to the "object of known height" and the distance from you to the tower.

the height of the tower = (height of known object) * (distance to the tower) / (distance from you to known object)

The height of a building can be easily measured with the use of a barometer.

The process is as follows:

-- With a barometer and a stopwatch, go to the roof of the building, and walk to the edge.

-- Drop the barometer from the roof. Start the stopwatch

when the barometer leaves your hand.

-- Watch the barometer as it falls. Stop the clock as soon as

the barometer hits the ground.

-- Let 'T'=the number of seconds measured by the clock.

-- The height of the building is [16 T2] feet, or [4.9 T2] meters.
