The most famous one in North America was the San Fransisco earthquake of 1906. A great fire followed this quake. Seven hundred people died and property damage amounted to about 425 million dollars.

More recently, in February 1971, a heavy earthquake in the Los Angeles area caused many million dollars in damage to homes, businesses and roadways.

One of the most famous earthquakes in Europe took place in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1755. The city was destroyed and at least thirty thousand people were killed.

Also, two great earthquakes that caused enormous damage took place in Tokyo, Japan and in the Kansu province of China. The Tokyo earthquake of 1923 killed more than a hundred thousand people and destroyed Tokyo and Yokohama. The Chinese earthquake of 1920 covered more than 300 square miles and killed about two hundred thousand people.

The biggest earthquake on record occurred off the coast of Chile in 1960. It was magnitude 9.5 on the Richter Scale. It had the same energy as 178 billion tons of TNT or about 10 million Hiroshima bombs.

It is believed that the asteroid that hit the Yucatan Peninsula 65.5 million years ago may have caused an earthquake of magnitude 13.0. This would have the same energy of 100 trillion tons of TNT or 6 billion Hiroshima bombs.
