Earthquakes happen near a fault line. Fault lines are places in the earth where the tectonic plates are cracked.

Tectonic plates are certain areas in the crust of the earth. The place at which these plates meet are actual cracks. These plates move and cause earthquakes.

The earthquake of March 11, 2011 most seriously affected Japan, but the tsunami waves traveled everywhere in the Pacific Ocean. Most affected were the United States (Alaska, Hawaii and California), Canada, and Mexico, but there were smaller tsunami waves along the coast of South America as well.
