You need circular knitting needles, which you can get at any craft shop. You can also use double pointed (also called double ended) needles. Double pointed needles ususally come in a set of 5 but you generally only need 4 to knit in the round. This is the traditional way of circular knitting used before circular needles were available. I think it's easiest to cast on the stitches using a straight needle first and then transfer them to the circular/double point needle after. Once you transfer all your stitches (be EXTREMELY CAREFUL NOT TO TWIST THE STITCHES!) you just join the two sides and knit away. Joining the ends is as easy as knitting to the end of the row and then knitting the first stitch without purling back or reversing direction at all. Knitting in the round is nice because you always go the same direction, the right side is always facing you, you don't have to change direction, and there are no seams to sew because your tube is closed (like a sock). There are tons of great books for beginners that can help you get more info about this. Best of luck to you! --jo

Can you knit a hat with straight needles?

You can if you seam up the side and it it is a great thing to do for beginners when you have the right pattern, which is the difficult part. Alternatively, if you do not wish to use circular needles you can use DPNs (double pointed needles) to knit in the round. Often in hat patterns which use circular needles you will need DPNs anyway, so it is good to have some of these when you knit in the round.

Is it possible to knit a beret with only knit stitch?

You'd probably need to know at least one kind of increase and decrease, but they could both be variations on the knit stitch (aka you don't need to know how to purl). It's also best to work hats in the round.

Why knit with two circular needles in the round instead of just one?

Just as when you change needle sizes using straight needles to give the effect you want -- you can change needle sizes when working in the round, to give the effect you want.Doubling up two needles at the same time would give you a looser knit and could prove cumbersome.

Knit in the round smooth join?

There are a number of ways to avoid a stair-step in your join when you knit in the round. Probably the simplest is to slip the first stitch after joining, and thereafter work every stitch normally. You can find a detailed explanation of the options available with diagrams at: http://techknitting.blogspot.com/2007/01/circular-knitting-3-in-1-techjoin_26.html
