My 6-cylinder 2004 Mazda 6 started out at about 26 mpg highway. I commute 160 miles a day--all freeway. It has the 5-speed manual transmission. The mileage has gradually increased to where I now get between 28 and 29.
Obviously, the various engine sizes and fuel types will mean there is a massive range of answers to this question. My 4-cylinder 2 litre petrol will do 41 to the gallon on a motorway, and I'm pretty sure the diesel 1.8 will hit around 60.
