How long does it take to drive 517 miles?

Answer 1

On a long trip, an average speed of 50 miles per hour is reasonable. This allows to drive faster than 50, but then stop for fuel and to take a break. So (517 mi) ÷ (50 mi/hr) = approx 10 1/3 hours, or 10 hr 20 min. (I rounded to 1/3, since 17 x 3 = 51, then 17 is a little more than 1/3 of 50). The actual number is 10.34 hours. If you could average 51.7 mph then it would take exactly 10 hours. I'd estimate that most people would not average much more than 60 mph on a long trip. If you could average 60 mph, it would take 8 hr 37 min.
