Assuming you have set the engine to #1 TDC and marked the position of the distributor and the position of the rotor, remove the distributor hold-down clamp and it's bolt, then pull the distributor up and out.
how to set timing on ford 1987 f-100 302 without timing light
The point gap is .017 inch / point dwell 26 - 30 / ignition timing 6 degrees BTDC / spark plug gap .035 inch / firing order 1 - 5 - 4 - 2 - 6 - 3 - 7 - 8 / distributor rotation COUNTERCLOCKWISE / according to motorcraft . com for a 1972 Ford truck with a 302 cubic inch V8 engine
I remove the distributor and rotate until the points are at the widest opening. Then using a .017mm fueler Gage I set the point gap. Reinstall the distributor, set timing and roll!
How do you set the timing on a 2300 mustang
There are two firing orders for the Ford 302. There is the standard 302 firing order of 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. Then there is the Ford 302 HO firing order which is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Make sure you are using the correct order. Set the #1 piston at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. Now install the distributor so the rotor is pointed at the #1 plug connection on distributor cap.
12 degrees btdc
set the plugs at .040 and all will be good.
i always had a meter with dwell on it you adj your points base and keep the gap the same Addition to above: Haven't messed with a points ignition in quite some time, but still have a Sun distributor machine and remember how to do it, if it's a dual point distributor the easiest way is to block one of the sets of points with a matchbook cover or thin piece of cardboard in between the points and set the dwell on the other set, then put the matchbook cover between the point set you just set the dwell on and set the dwell on the other set, then remove the matchbook cover and your done. If you're doing this on the car (as opposed to doing it on a distributor machine) you should then re-set or at least check the timing.
Ford hasn't used points since the early 1970's.
To set the timing on a 1984 Ford 302, you will need a timing light. Make sure the engine is warmed up and the timing connector is unplugged. Aim the timing light at the timing marks, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt, and turn the distributor until the mark lines up with the specified degree on the timing cover. Tighten the distributor bolt and reconnect the timing connector to complete the process.
