SAE is American or standard thread and metric is everything else. The size or diameter is different and the pitch of the thread is different also.

They should be metric,bolts with numbers on them 8.8,9.8 ect.There could be a few SAE bolts on the engine depending on your engine type.If there are no numbers on them,and have short slashes they are SAE.
