i would say yes, seeing as my two closest friends and myself are coincidentally masochistic (we didn't meet at some club or anything, just talked about emotional issues and it came up for all of us) for at least one of them and myself, i guess you could call it severe, assuming the want and desire to be cut, made to bleed, beaten until unable to stand and burned is severe,
so, yeah, i guess masochists are pretty common, and my girlfriend and other two friends are sadists (again, entirely coincidental) so i guess it can be said that sadists are equally common,
