A factor is a divisor - a number that will evenly divide into another number.

One way to determine the common factors and greatest common factor is to find all the factors of the numbers and compare them.

The factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, and 6.

The factors of 20 are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, and 20.

The common factors are 1 and 2.

Make two lists(one for factors of 6, and the other for factors of 20). In other words, find all the possible pairs of two numbers that can multiply together to make 6 and 20.

1 x 6 = 6

2 x 3 = 6

1 x 20 = 20

2 x 10 = 20

4 x 5 = 20

Secondly, you would look at your list of factors and determine which number(s) appear in both list. As you can see, 1 and 2 appears as a factor for both 6 and 20. Therefore, the common factors for 6 and 20 are 1 and 2.
