The multiples of 12 are 12, 24, 36, 48 and keep on adding 12.

The multiples of 16 are 16, 32, 48, 64 and keep on adding 16.

If you look at the two of these, you can see there is a least common multiple. A least common multiple is the smallest multiple that are shared by two (or more) numbers. If you list the multiples down, you can see 48 are in both, so 48 is the least common multiple for 12 and 16.
