The formal definition of a Prime number is an integer which has exactly two unique natural number factors. Though this may seem like gibberish, its true meaning is any number which has only two positive factors, but both factors must be different. Generally this means that the factors of a prime number are itself and one. Take 13 for instance. No two whole numbers multiply to get 13 except 1 and 13. 2 is the only even prime number because all other prime numbers are divisible by 2. 1 is not a prime number because it only has one unique factor: 1.
Prime numbers are defined by the characteristic of only being divisible by 1 and itself.
