It depends on why the tree was chopped down in the first place. The Forestry Commission part fell their pine forests (quick growing softwood) in sections to provide fence posts, garden fence panels and to make paper. At one time, the main market was for pit props to be used in coal mines - mines long since closed down in the UK. Private growers may crop hardwood trees or softwood trees grown on their land mainly to sell for money to saw mills. Even the bark stripped off softwood trees can be sold as mulch, much sort after by gardeners, to be used to suppress weeds.

The answer depends on why they chopped it down: was it for lumber, for firewood, to make a clearing, or because the tree was diseased?
