To find 10% of any number is very simple. Let's do an example first: You have 100 apples. You want to give your friend 10% of these apples. How many do you give him? To find the answer, simply divide the number you have by the number you want to give (100/10). We all know that 10 goes into 100 ten times. So, you will give your friend 10 apples. Now take a careful look at the original amount (100) and the answer (10). What I want you to do now is add a decimal behind those numbers (100.0 and 10.0). Do you see it, now? What we did was move the decimal one place to the left. You can find 10% of any real number or decimal using this method because all decimals work in multiples of 10 (10th, 100th, 1000th, etc). So, how do we find 10% of 482? We will do the same exact thing that we did with the 100 apples. Put the decimal behind 482 (482.) and then move it one place to the left. The answer: 48.2 As practice, try finding 10% of these numbers: (342), (822), (101), (1,000), and (505.5).
