If you include decimals,. then there isn't any 'greatest'. Whatever number you choose,

no matter how near it is to 8,500 , I can always fit another, larger one in between

your number and 8,500 .

But if you limit the discussion to only whole numbers, then the answer is 8,499 .

By the way ... If you're looking for "... the greatest possible number that is ... less than 8,500 ...",

then it makes no difference what it's greater than. We don't need the "8,000" at all.

Q: What is the greatest possible number that is greater than 8000 but less than 8500?

what is the largest possible number in tens of thousands nearest to 80000

137, 144, 8000, 75092, 8710022 A longer number (not counting anything to the right of the decimal point) is greater than a shorter number. For numbers of the same length, compare the digits one at a time, starting from the left.

If a number is greater than 40,000, it can't also be less than 8,000.

Without any UNITS for the 8000 it is impossible to answer as a number with units in incomparable to a number with units.I guess you meant 8000 METRES as 5 miles is approx 8 km.1 mile = 1609.344 m (exactly)5 miles = 5 × 1609.334 m (exactly) = 8046.72 m (exactly)→ 5 miles are 8046.72 m - 8000 m = 46.72 m greater.

There are infinitely many possible answers.Let X be any number greater than or equal to 4000. Let Y = 8000 - X. Then X + Y = X + 8000 - X = 8000.So X = 4010 gives the pair 4010 and 3990X = 8050 gives 8050 and -50X = 6103.75 gives 1896.25 and so on.
