There are two conventions for using the "kilo", "mega", "giga" prefixes in computers. The common one is to represent multiples of 210 or 1024, and the other represents multiples of 103 or 1000.

Going by the first convention then, one kilobyte is equal to 1024 bytes, each byte is equal to eight bits, and each bit represents an on/off switch (or 1/0 state) in the computer. So a kilobyte is equal to 8192 bits.

Going by the second (more recent and less widely accepted) convention, a kilobyte equals 1000 bytes, or 8000 bits.
