Okay let's say you have a rectangle. The length is 36 inches and the width is 12 inches.

You know to find the area in square inches, just multiply length times width.

So 36 inches X 12 inches = 432 square inches.

In order to turn that into square feet, just take the square inches and divide by 12 because there are 12 inches in a foot.

So 432 square inches divided by 12 equals 36 square feet. Not so there are 144 square inches in a square foot, divide by 144
