They didn't have electronic calculators. Abacuses (or is it abaci? no clue... oh well...) are calculators, and they could use them to calculate things.
In 1972, I worked at Texas Instruments, one of the early makers of electronic calculators. We charged $250 to $700, depending on features. Then in about 1973-74, Casio came out with a calculator for $19.95.
