The cubic capacity of an engine may be stated in English or metric (e.g. 283 cu. in., 3.5L).

The measurement is calculated as the bore diameter2 multiplied by the stroke of the piston times pi over 4, times the number of cylinders.

For example, a bore of 4 inches with a stroke of 3.25 inches and 8 cylinders gives (42 x 3.25 x 3.14 / 4) x 8. Calculating that out gives 327 cu. in.

In metric, a bore of 93 mm and stroke of 73 and 6 cylinders gives (932x73x3.14/4) x 6 = 2.97 million. Divide by one million to get 2.97 L.
