First, you must determine which primary units of measure you want to use for the variables. In this example, let's assume that we are dealing with a retangular area of measure and the area's length and width can be measured in feet. Feet will be our primary unit of measure so everything else must eventually be converted to feet at some point for the equation to work. Assume that one side of the area has a Length (L) of 12 feet. The perpendicular side has a length, which in this case we will label as the Width (W) of 14 feet. By multiplying these together, we can detemrine the square footage of the area: L x W = Area, or 12 x 14 = 168 feet squared. Since we are looking for a cubic measure, we need a third variable to represent the height or depth of the cubic space. Let's label this as Height (H) and assume that the easiest way to represent it is by using Inches. Let's assume that the H = 4 inches. Since we know that we have to convert inches to feet, we can do this simply by dividing the number of inches by 12 (12 inches per foot). In this case, 4 inches converts to 0.333 feet. To find the cubic are in feet, simply multiply the area (168 feet squared) by the height (0.333 feet) and we get approximately 55.95 feet cubed. Since there are 27 cubic feet per cubic yard (3 feet x 3feet x 3feet = 27 feet cubed), we can simply divide our answer by 27 and come up with the cubic yards. In this case, the answer is 55.95 / 27 = 2.072 cubic yards. If you know how use a spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel, you can build your own simple conversion table and see how all of this works together. Once you figure out the rectangle, and if you know how to determine the area of any other shape, you can covert those areas into cubic measurements also. I'm no good at math so I alwways have to work to figure these things out, but it's never a bad thing to learn something new. Good luck and have fun.

You do not because cubic means volume and square means area. A tank that measures 1 yd wide by 1 yd long by 1 yd tall has a volume of 1 cubic yard and the area of its basis ( 1yd wide by 1yd long) equals 1 square yard.

You need to know the depth of area to be filled first. A cubic yard is a cube measuring 1 yard on each side.

So for instance if you are filling a hole that is 2 yards by 2 yards big and 1 yard deep you would need 4 cubic yards of material.

Volume of a cube is length x width x height (thickness in this case). If you measure in feet, say 10 feet by 6 feet by 1/2 foot thick, you have 30 cubic feet. To get yards, divide by 27 and you will get 1.11 cubic yards.

a cubic yard is already a measure of volume. it depends what you are converting from that requires a formula for conversion
