There is a choice of 14 students for the first; For each of these there is a choice of any of the remaining 13 students in the second place, making 14 × 13 choices so far; for each of these there is a choice of any of the remaining 12 students in the second place, making 14 × 13 × 12 choices so far; and so on, until all 5 places have been filled which has 14 × 13 × 12 × 11 × 10 = 240,240 different ways. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a mathematical Permutation where there is a selection of r items from a group of n items. It can be calculated as: nPr = n! / (n - r)! Where n! means "n factorial" and is n × (n - 1) × (n - 2) × ... × 2 × 1. 0! is defined to be 1. You will find it on most scientific calculators. On the Casio fx-83GT Plus, fx-85ES, fx-115MS it is found as [shift] [×]; on the Casio fx-83WA and Texet aLBΣRT³ it is found as [shift] [nCr]; for other calculators you'll need to read the manual (those are the only ones I have [handy] on which I can check). If you do not have the nPr function, you should have the factorial (!) function and can use the formula above.
