FLAMES stands for Friends, Lovers, Affection, Marriage, Enemies, Siblings — it's a classic name-compatibility method that works like this:

Write out both names and cross out any letters that appear in both (each matching pair cancels once — so if a letter appears twice in one name and once in the other, only one pair cancels).

Count the total remaining (uncancelled) letters across both names.

Use that count to "count off" through F-L-A-M-E-S in a loop, eliminating one letter each time you reach it — similar to how the classic "eeny meeny" elimination game works — until only one letter is left.

Whichever of the six letters survives is your result.

Example: "RAHUL" and "PRIYA" — cross out shared letters (R, A appear in both), count what's left, then use that number to eliminate letters from FLAMES one at a time until one remains.

It's not based on any real relationship science — it's a fixed, reproducible algorithm rather than randomness, which is why it gives the same result every time for the same two names, and why it's stayed a popular "for fun" tool for decades.
