This used to confuse me before it dawned on me. As this is a cubed equation (distance by distance by distance), the answer is not simply 100.

In a metre there are 100cm

In a metre squared there are 10,000cm2 (100x100)

In a metre cubed there are 100x100x100, i.e. 1,000,000 cm3

1 cu m = 1 million cu cm

1 m = 100 cm

1 cu m = 1 m x 1 m x 1 m = 100 cm x 100 cm x 100 cm = 1,000,000 cm
