In earth-moving, landscaping a yard is an abbreviation for a cubic yard, or in a metric environment, a metre is an abbreviation for a cubic metre.

If a customer were to order 25 tonne of material, then that was taken as to mean a cubic yard. The mass of gravel approximates 1 tonne per cubic yard and that is why the terminology is interchangeable.

With the advent of stricter consumer protection laws, terminology such as "a yard" is gradually fading out and being replaced with very accurate weights usually using a digital weighbridge.
