If it is linked then when the data in the spreadsheet is changed, that change will show in the Word document. If it is embedded, then changes in the spreadsheet will not have any effect on the figures in the Word document.
The extension xls is a spreadsheet and xlt is a template. A template is a pre-designed layout for an Excel spreadsheet.
An equation has an equal = sign whereas an expression does not.
An expression has no equal sign whereas an equation does have an equal sign
