Computer software tells the hardware what to do. Without any software, the hardware would be worthless. Think of the software as a subject in school, and the hardware as you or your brain. Without any learning, you can't do anything. One you have learned some math, then you are able to solve math problems. This learning is usually accomplished through downloads or CD's that are loaded into the computer.
At the very basic level, computer software contains specific instructions for how to accomplish a specific task. These instructions tell the hardware exactly what to do, and how to do it.

Without software computer doesn't even start. When you are using any computer, there needs to be an Operating System on it to help it work. It also allows you to run others kinds of software, which is known as Application Software. Applications are what most people use computers for. It enables them to do all sorts of different things. Standard things included things like word processors and spreadsheets. People play games. People surf the internet. The software gives people a reason to use a computer. Applications work with the users and also with the operating system. The operating system interacts with the hardware of the computer. Without software, a computer is useless.
While most people don't think of software as a computer component, it pretty much is once you think about it. You cannot use a computer without it. Without even Notepad, Windows Media Player, Paint, Wordpad, and Internet Explorer, Windows would be essentially useless without user installed software. The OS brings the computer up to the point where you can use software, so without software, there is nothing you can do next.
