The mains that you are talking about sounds like a breaker to me if it tripped off automatically. These days main breakers are rated in the 100 to 400 amp range depending on the size of the house. This is a overcurrent device that trips on a short circuit. They don't shut off without a reason. What was being done at the time of the trip. Renovations? If you can elaborate a little further I might be able to pinpoint the cause.
