Some discs are just flat solid units. Slotted ones, tend to be wider, and there are cooling air slots in the outer edge, between the braking surfaces. There are also discs with drillings and water flinging slots in the actual braking surface, where the pads operate. These are usually marketed as high performance, for improved braking.
