In order to convert from a mass unit (grams) to a volume unit (mL) you'll need to know the density of the item being measured. Unless it is water. 400g of water = 400mL.

If you're measuring water, then yes. For anything else you'll need to know it's density in order to convert from a volume unit to a mass unit.
