There's a number of reasons

The first is that alcohol is a diuretic.

Diuretic substances cause your body to expel more liquid than it's taking in (If you've ever had just one beer but needed to pee a lot, band the pee is pretty much clear, this is why, your body is expelling useful water).

Expelling excess water causes dehydration, you only need to lose about 8% of your body's total water content to die from dehydration and frequent lesser dehydrations can damage vital organs.

The most common issue in alcoholics is Liver damage.

Alcohol is toxic The human liver filters out alcohol. Excess alcohol can basically (without going into too much detail) overload the liver, causing semi-permanent, or in some cases permanent damage. If the liver stops functioning, or fucntions are a lower level then toxic substances are not filtered out of the blood stream.

Toxic substances are surprisingly common. Our liver filters them out/neutralises them as they cause damage to other cells.

Alcohol as a substance damages cells (sometimes permanently) in the brain and heart, which can lead to, unsurprisingly, brian damage and Heart disease. Damage to cells can also lead to cancer.

I could go on all day. Beer is great, but everything in moderation folks.

Because it's world-recognized as a intoxicating drug (but when used responsibly can be used as a social lubricant - makes it easier to talk to people and create social connections). Also, if you see the last attempt done in American history (aka Prohibition), the law failed substantially - people made illegal Alcoholic Beverages (which were known as bootleggers - because it was hinted that people stashed containers in their boots) that might have other things that may actually make you sick or kill you - and organized crime becomes prevalent taking charge of the alcohol trade.

It isn't. How you use it may be good or bad but the alcohol isn't bad.

No. To use alcohol or not is a personal choice. When Alcohol was banned during prohibition it simply created another class of criminal and more unenforceable laws.
