What piece of lab equipment is used to measure work?
There are different methods of measuring work.
Work is defined as a change in state of energy from one form to
another. Mechanical energy can be measured in horsepower,
foot-pounds or their metric equivalent. This is measured with a
dynamometer. Electrical energy is measured in watts, this is
measured with a watt-ohm meter, or a volt-ammeter. Heat energy is
measured with a thermometer, and potential energy can be measured
with a calorimeter. For other types of energy there are different
tools used to measure it.
In order to determine work performed, the energy before the work
is done must be measured, then the energy after the work is done is
measured, then the work done can be calculated from the
results.
