Positive numbers are bigger than negative numbers.

You can also prove it in this case by adding two (2) to both numbers and then comparing. (In algebra doing the same action to both sides of an equation is preserves the relationship between values.)

+1+2= 3

-1+2= 1

3 > 1, therefore 1 > -1
