This is incorrect, but I don't know the right answer.

In a finite set it is the maximum. In an infinite set it is the upper bound which may not actually be attained. For example, the largest number in the infinite set 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/5 etc tends to 1 but the number 1 is not a member of the set.
