The correct spelling would be vernier callipers, or vernier calipers depending on which country you come from. They are used for measuring the inner distance between two surfaces. A caliper is a device used to measure very small lengths of the order of one tenth of a mm and micro meter ie one thousandth of a milli meter. Such a device was first designed by Vernier. Hence the name. Though a milli meter gap cannot be divided into equal parts using an additional scale such a division could be done virtually. Thanks to Vernier.
