Glands in the electrical trade are used to make a seal between two electrical components. For an example; a cable coming into a weather proof junction box requires a sealing gland connector to keep the integrity of the junction box's weather proof rating where the cable enters into the box.

Gland also used to ensure that the metallic armor is in contact with the cabinet on which it gets fitted. But these days where plastic boxes and plastic glands are being common this practice is rarely applied nowadays.(In India)

Gland ensures that there is no unnecessary pressure, stress on the cable conductor, but firmly holding it on to while providing a reliable entry of the cable into the box.

In North America any cable holding device that is not water proof is called a cable connector.
