The most famous part of the novel, the battle against the school of giant squid, begins when a crewman opens the hatch of the boat and gets caught by one of the monsters. As he is being pulled away by the tentacle that has grabbed him, he yells "Help!" in French. At the beginning of the next chapter, concerning the battle, Aronnax states that: "To convey such sights, one would take the pen of our most famous poet, Victor Hugo, author of The Toilers of the Sea". The Toilers of the Sea also contains an episode where a worker fights a giant octopus, wherein the octopus symbolizes the Industrial Revolution. It is probable that Verne borrowed the symbol, but used it to allude to the Revolutions of 1848 as well, in that the first man to stand against the "monster" and the first to be defeated by it is a Frenchman. In his official report on the situation with the monster, Aronnax offers various reasons why it is possible that a giant narwhal may exciting the year 1868, rumors of a sea monster attacking ships in the Pacific Ocean have created apprehension and fear among sailors, disrupting the shipping lanes. Prof. Pierre M. Aronnax and his assistant, Conseil, are on their way to Saigon but get stuck in San Francisco by the halting of ships. The US government invites Aronnax onto an expedition to either prove or disprove the monster's existence. One of their fellow crew is the cocky master harpooner Ned Land. the monster is scary. But it is a good book and very excellent movie.

The oceans during the late 1860-92s are no longer safe; many ships have been lost. Sailors have returned to port with stories of a vicious narwhal (a giant whale with a long horn) which sinks their ships. A naturalist, Professor (Pierre) Aronnax, his assistant, Conseil, and a professional whaler, Ned Land, join an US expedition which attempts to unravel the mystery

Who played Captain Nemo in the 20000 Leagues Under the Sea Disney movie?

The book wasn't about what he did UNDER the sea at 20000 leagues because the Nautilus reaches about 10000 leagues under the sea and the pressure was too big that it decided to go back to the open sea. This book is about M.Aronnax's adventure around the sea, and he calculated that he traveled 20000 leagues of the sea all together. He called it "under the sea" because the Nautilus is a submarine so it's obvious that he stayed "under" the sea most of the time.
