Fibonacci, proper name Leonardo of Pisa (c. 1170 - c. 1250) was probably the most talented mathematician of the middle ages. His father was Guglielmo who was nicknamed Bonaccio ('good natured' or 'simple'). Leonardo's mother was Alessandra who died when he was nine years old.

Leonardo's nickname was derived from the latin '''filius Bonacci''' which means 'son of Bonaccio'.
