Five square feet is a measurement of area, not length, so it is a two-dimensional measurement. To determine the size in terms of length, you would need to find the square root of 5, which is approximately 2.24 feet. This means that a square with an area of 5 square feet would have sides that are approximately 2.24 feet long.

5sq ft = a square with sides all of approximately 2'2" in long.

(2.2360679775ft to be more precise, the square root of 5).

for roughly visualising shapes that aren't squares, just imagine 5 lots of 1ftx1ft squares in whatever arrangement works best for the shape you are comparing to

an area of 5 feet by 5 feet. Measure 5ft north, 5ft west, 5ft south and 5ft east. The square you make will have an area of 5 feet squared.
