Carbon moves from the atmosphere to plants. In the atmosphere, carbon is attached to oxygen in a gas called carbon dioxide (CO2). [ [ With the help of the Sun, through the process of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide is pulled from the air to make plant food from carbon. # Carbon moves from plants to animals. Through food chains, the carbon that is in plants moves to the animals that eat them. Animals that eat other animals get the carbon from their food too. # Carbon moves from plants and animals to the ground. When plants and animals die, their bodies, wood and leaves decay bringing the carbon into the ground. Some becomes buried miles underground and will become fossil fuels in millions and millions of years. # Carbon moves from living things to the atmosphere. Each time you exhale, you are releasing carbon dioxide gas (CO2) into the atmosphere. Animals and plants get rid of carbon dioxide gas through a process called respiration. ] ]
It has a tetrahedral structure: there are three atoms of hydrogen attached to the central atom (carbon) as well as an oxygen. There are no lone pairs on the carbon. This will result in a steric number of 4.

If you remember the Star Trek phrase "Carbon based life form", that's us. Every time you see a pentagonal or hexagonal drawing in chemistry and biology, that's a ring of Carbon atoms, sometimes with a Nitrogen or Oxygen stuck in there. Almost all sugars, alcohols, most solid things like bones are quite a bit of Carbon. One example is in the link below about DNA structures.
Graphite.
Carbon and hydrogen. Benzene is a hexagonal ring formed of carbon-carbon bonds, alternatively double and single. http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb157/hortaux/benzene.jpg
The stress on the carbon=carbon bonds is minimal in a hexagonal carbon ring. Fewer carbons raises the stress and increases the likelihood of bonds breaking.
Carbon is present in all organic compounds.
Carbon is an element, not a compound.
Carbon. Carbon.
carbon i think
Carbon can be organic and non organic.
Graphite and diamond both are compounds of carbon. These are allotropes of carbon. Graphite has a layered, planar structure. In each layer, the carbon atoms are arranged in a hexagonal lattice with separation of 0.142 nm, and the distance between planes is 0.335 nm.[6] The two known forms of graphite are, alpha(hexagonal) and beta (rhombohedral).A diamond is a transparent crystal of tetrahedral bonded carbon atoms (sp3) that crystallizes into the diamond lattice which is a variation of the face centered cubic structure.
probably 92.3% of carbon is present in acetylene..
