Kilometer is a unit of length, square meter is a unit of area. These don't translate.

Kilo- means thousand

so is 1,000 long times 1,000 high

then 1,000 x 1,000 = 1,000,000

1 kilometre is 1000 metres. So 1 square km is 1000*1000m = 1 million sqm. Not 100 million!
